Boarding School: The school began with 2 rooms rented in a house; with 2 teachers and 35
students. The main goal of this school is to provide education in general and also concentrate on issues of sanitation, reforestation,
discipline and all streams of general education. At present, it boasts a total of 450 students and 32 teachers and provides
classes for children up to 10th grade. The venture, which started with 2 rooms, now has 100 acres of land and also
has five buildings with science labs and also a library – though this library needs lot more assistance.
At present, the
school is a sister- school
of Superior Elementary School of Superior, Colorado, USA. The
children of this school receive scholarships from its sister school in the US
and also receive many opportunities of teacher visits from this school and an exposure to the school in the US.
It holds the goals of providing modern facilities, like
in the US, to the children of this village.
It plans to build up more labs, computer labs, swimming pool and other sports facilities. It also has plans to build up a
good playground.
Barun Campus: The
Barun campus was established in 1986 for students of khandbari and remote villages for achieving a further education after
completing their high school. Students from these remote villages were not able to continue their studies after primary school,
because the schools for further education are located in faraway and expensive cities. The students would have to walk three
to five days to get to these schools. Leaving their families behind, leaving the work at home behind, living independently
in an expensive city … Further education seemed to be out of reach for these mountain children. The foundation of the
Barun campus tries to provide these children with a high standard of living through good and affordable education. The Barun
campus has 17 teachers and nearly 5,000 students. That number is still growing, so modernisation and expansion will be needed.
Not only in terms of space, but also in terms of study subjects, in order to provide a varied education in co-operation with
companies and public institutions. The campus is a charity, funded by subsidies and donations, and operates for the community.
In the future the campus will also provide student accommodation, additional classrooms and a new library.
